During 2008-9 I was living in the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, and to support myself I got a job rolling spring rolls at a Vietnamese restaurant: Pho Tau Bay. The kitchen was covered in calendars from their food vendors. All of the staff were recent immigrants, almost exclusively from Vietnam. Rather unexpectedly, there is a huge population of Vietnamese immigrants that live in South Louisiana - in the swampy outskirts of New Orleans, there are entire self-sufficient villages where no English is spoken.New Orleans is a place of magic, collapse, rot and rebirth that feels out of place and time. Making a calendar together only made sense, and was an opportunity for me to add my own little bit of spice to the soup.
